The cover for The Crossword Puzzle Mystery is actually the second version. I had started painting a different layout, which you can see in the image series in this post. I struggled with getting things the way I wanted, and then I decided I wanted to try something else entirely.

So, I flipped my drawing board around, taped down a second piece of paper, and started over. You can see the original painting upside down, taped towards the bottom of the drawing board.

There are things I like better about the first image, but I didn't like the way Lene and Marta ended up looking and so I knew that instead of reworking them over and over, I just needed a fresh approach.
