Answers
  1. You should make your reservation yesterday. No kidding, October fills up quickly. By January, we often are nearly full for the upcoming season. Make your reservation as quickly as you can.  |back to top|
  2. We don't offer a guided hunting service, tours, or any sort of guiding. We can give you maps, offer helpful advice and shower you with tips, but we don't do any guiding.  |back to top|
  3. The 1500 acres we have will be posted during hunting season so that only our guests have access to it. However, land that still has crop on it, such as sunflowers or soybeans, needs to be respected by hunters and you should not drive through it to get to a slough. The same can be said for guests during other times of the year: respect fields with crop on them. The pastures and grassland areas are, of course, wide open any time of year. And yes, you are always welcome to venture out on your own in search of other land in the region. Just be sure you get permission from landowners before doing so.  |back to top|
  4. The best place to figure out what you might need is to check out our trip planning page. If you still have questions, feel free to contact us.  |back to top|
  5. I don't know why North Dakota gets such a bad rap - maybe because it doesn't have mountains and hasn't been featured in movies or something - but no. It's not purgatory here. Yes, it can get cold in the winter, and hot for a short while in the summer, but really, it's quite beautiful in a non-obvious non- "mountains in the distance, oceans behind me" way. This is the prairie. It really is beautiful. That's why we live here.  |back to top|
  6. The Homestead is NOT just for hunters, although the month of October will be taken up by hunters. Everyone is welcome, from bird-watchers, hikers, escapists, or people just passing through.  |back to top|
  7. The town of Hampden, population 50, is two miles away and has a small cafe, grocery story, post office, bar, service station and implement dealer. Munich is about 12 miles north and is similar to Hampden in size and amenities. Cando is 28 miles west and is a bit larger with a few larger stores and services, including a vintage movie theater. Langdon is 35 miles north and is comparable in size to Cando, with it's own vintage movie theater and similar stores. Devils Lake is 40 miles south and the nearest "big" city, with grocery stores, shopping, movie theater, etc. Grand Forks is a two-hour drive east, and is one of the bigger cities in the state.  |back to top|
  8. We tend to leave our guests alone because most come here knowing what they're going to do. However, if you should happen to be a guest that just came for the heck of it, maybe to get away from the city for a while, and have no plans, you can certainly let us know of your interest in doing something. Lone Prairie Art Works is based here, right across the road from The Homestead, and you might get a chance to make art, make paper out of natural plants, or other similar activities depending on the season. Just let us know - you're not pestering us. You're welcome to come over to our house and see what we're up to next, borrow some books, DVDs, wander around the farm, etc.  |back to top|
  9. You will be charged a fee to be picked up at the train or airport, and we will bring you directly here and then back when it is time for you to go. Once here, if you let us know that you want us to make you aware of when we go to Devils Lake or Grand Forks, etc. for errands and want to come along, we'll make sure you're taken care of. Hampden, of course, is within walking distance if you don't mind two miles of easy walking (not in the winter, of course), but we'll help you out or pick things up for you if you let us know your concerns.  |back to top|
  10. The Homestead is not a lovely bed and breakfast. There are no cute rooms filled with antiques and chintz curtains and matched everything. It is a ranch style house from the 50's, and its interior shows that it was indeed a real house, really used. The furniture is mismatched but clean and functional. The same can be said for pretty much everything else in the house. If you have high-standard luxury tastes, you might want to check out our "is it for me?" page before coming. Otherwise, here's the summation: you'll be comfortable but not in the lap of luxury. It's a real house lived in and owned by real people from rural North Dakota. Paris Hilton would not come here, let's put it that way.  |back to top|
  11. If you are part of a large group that occupies the most of or the entire house, yes. Otherwise this house functions as a hostel and you may have others sharing the house with you. Your nightly fee is not reduced nor increased based on other occupancy. |back to top|
