Hampden, ND

ND Links

We are located about 45 miles south of the Canadian border, two miles west of the small town of Hampden (population: 50). We are 40 miles north of the city of Devils Lake, known for it's large lake and world-class fishing.

The Homestead is located on 1500 acres in the middle of the Prairie Pothole region, meaning it is surrounded by sloughs (ponds) filled with waterfowl and wildlife in amongst the grain fields. In fact, when we say surrounded, we mean it. Four large sloughs are a stone's throw from The Homestead, and during the spring and summer, the sound of the wildlife in the evening is extremely relaxing.

If you're not sure The Homestead is the place for you, check and make sure

Kitchen and Dining Facilities - The Homestead is not a bed and breakfast, and you are responsible for your own food. :
  • Full-size refrigerator and freezer
  • Modern stove and oven
  • Microwave
  • Dishes, pots and pans, utensils, etc.
  • Dining room table, with chairs

You may bring your own food and beverages with you. Hampden also has a small grocery store from which you could purchase your basic items. We can help you with more information on where to shop should you be planning a long stay and/or are without a vehicle. We are one of the very few people who did not sign up with rural water, so the water that comes out of the tap is genuine North Dakota well water. We love it. People who have grown up on treated city water, however, generally hate it. We generally arrange to have jugs of treated rural water available for you in The Homestead. But there's nothing wrong with the water that comes out of the tap.

Living Quarters - The Homestead has three bedrooms. Two of the rooms have two single beds in them, and one has a double. The basement also has two single beds, but those are used as a "last resort":
  • Communal living room with sofas and chairs; one sofa pulls out into a bed
  • Two bedrooms with two single beds in each room
  • One bedroom with one double bed
  • Basement library has two single beds ("last resort" lodging)
  • Pool table in basement
  • Washer and dryer for use, free of charge
  • Small deck off the front of the house
  • One bathroom, with bathtub/shower combination
  • Bedding and towels are provided, free of charge
Modern Amenities What can you expect as far as modern amenities?:
  • Yes, there is electricity and heat
  • Yes, there is running water, both hot and cold
  • Yes, there is a TV in the living room...but it's old, there's no VCR or DVD player, and we don't get cable. Now that's not to say North Dakota doesn't have cable, just that we don't get cable. It's a personal choice we made to watch less TV. You'll get the local ABC channel, maybe PBS, and that's it.
  • There is no phone. Cell phone service for some providers is spotty. We live right across the road from The Homestead, and so you are always welcome to use our phone in an emergency.
  • There is no internet. However, at our house we do have a WiFi DSL connection, which you are again welcome to use in an emergency, or if you stay for a long time and need to keep up with your email or weblog. We have a few computers (all PC's, sorry) and of course you can use your WiFi enabled laptop if you have one, so don't worry: you haven't fallen off of the edge of the earth. You can stay connected very well, if you need to, but you'll have to walk across the road to our house.
  • We'll bother you as much or as little as you want, meaning that we'll completely leave you alone unless you want to come over to our house to use the phone, internet, sit on the front porch and talk, borrow a DVD and portable DVD player, have a bonfire in our backyard fire pit, play our piano, take part in art activities (Lone Prairie Art Works), bum a ride with someone to Devils Lake or Grand Forks to do some shopping...you get the idea. It's all your call.
Camping Can I camp at The Homestead?:
  • We're not running a campground, but you're obviously welcome to put up a tent in some very beautiful and secluded spots that aren't in grain production
  • In a pinch, we've had hunters park campers near our house to access water and electricity hookups. We're limited in number, so contact us for details.
  • If you're camping, you'll need permission for fires, etc., and we'd ask that you pack your garbage out so that you leave the site as you found it.
  • Tent camping would be primitive to the utmost - there are no bathroom or outhouses. I'd recommend reading this book. :-)
  • If you're camping and really need a shower or bathroom, feel free to stop up at our house and see if we're home; we'll probably let you use our facilities. We're pretty nice people. Sorry, though. No gold faucets and fixtures or Italian marble in our own plain-Jane bathrooms.
