Horse Statue
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This painting is based on a photo I took in front of the Art Museum in Hamburg, Germany.
It is one of my favorite paintings, a strange few hours where I somehow saw the statue in brushstrokes and colliding colors.

Neglectable Pets: VetTech 2 and the Spotted Kitty.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 1 comments link this post
VetTech 2 has a lot in common with the first VetTech Neglectable Pet.
Mainly, it's pain.
This toy was made by request, and is "baby-proofed." That is, it has no beans inside, and not decorative detail that would be harmful. It's a low maintenance washable bundle of painful fun.

Purse: Pug dog.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 1 comments link this post
I made this purse for a friend (for Christmas 2007) who has a pug dog, which she loves. My friend and I both love interesting purses, and I wanted to make her something that she would enjoy. This was one of those great gifting moments where, as I sewed the top stitching, or maybe hand sewed the eyes or trim, I smiled. I kept imagining how my friend might like the gift, and how much fun it was to make something for someone. (This truly is a great example of why we should all be doing this.)
This purse is truly unique; I had no pattern, and made up the design as I went along. The pug dog was made on the fly, with top stitching used as line work, as if in a drawing, to depict wrinkles and other features of the dog.
This pug dog purse is made from polar fleece, a vintage tie, cotton lining, and red piping detailing both inside and out. The back of the purse features the "LP" leather tag with an easy-to-reach pocket for a cell phone. Inside the purse, the liner has three pockets. The clasp of the purse, made from the tie, is a magnetic "button" for simple and fast closure. The handle of the purse is made from the tie as well, with double top-stitched ends reinforced inside for sturdy use.

Neglectable Pets: VetTech
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
VetTech probably enjoyed her job more when the wild tabby cats weren't sinking claws into her head.
No lie: this neglectable pet is based on a real story.
It's the sad story of a vet tech trying to do her best and finding that there are some crazy critters that just don't want to be helped.
Crazy critters that leap to the top of the head and latch on and go berserk.

All pets are made one at a time by myself, making use of two decades worth of my mother's fabric and notion scraps. Each has a mouth that is a fully functional pocket for you to hide valuable stuff. You can neglect them and yet they will retain a continual look of crazy-eyed bemusement. Each pet is original, one-of-a-kind, and based on a pattern of my own creation.::

Neglectable Pets: PinkEye
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
PinkEye has just that.
Despite her impressive grades and Master's degreen in early childhood education, she has great difficulty find any work in her chosen field.
After all, who wants their kid around someone with pink eye?.
It's too bad, that chronic pink eye. She's really very nice, actually. The nice thing about it is that if anyone wants to keep manhandling your neglectable pet, you can simply say "Don't touch! She has pink eye!"

Fanor on the Guitar.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This is a painting based on a photo taken on a recent trip to Nicaragua. It shows Fanor, playing the guitar.
He played the guitar quietly, like he was whenever I saw him.
I suppose I could say more, but I think the painting should speak for itself at some point.

The City Where I Love You.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
In a college class, I read the poetry of Li-Young Lee. His book entitled The City In Which I Love You captured my attention for a while. The title itself worked its way around my mind.
I know this feeling of a place where normal life seems to stop for a bit and the strangeness of a different place made me certain that this was the city I loved someone. Leaving the city meant I left that behind, whether I wanted to or not. It's this thing I relegated to a place; the person, the feeling, the moment, the memory -- left there. That way I could associate the memory with geography and find it easy to locate and easy to leave, like a city.
There are people I loved in cities, in places, whether they knew it or not. Maybe it wasn't love. But it was something.

T-shirt 003: Lone Prairie merchandise.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
T-Shirt 003:
Shirt reads: www.loneprairie.net: An equal opportunity employer. Truly.
White XL Women's Old Navy "perfect fit" 100 percent cotton t-shirt dyed by hand with tea.
The graphic is original and of my design, and is pressed onto the shirt through a cut-vinyl and heat process. Pink stitching throughout the design and the cut-out eyes with a delicate color panel sewn on the inside of the shirt make this truly unique.
The collar has a pink, frayed accent with a tiny pink bow
on the back where a tag would be. The sleeve cuffs and hem have a ragged look.
Variations in stitching, dye, and the frayed edges are part of the intended look and are not defective. All detailing and altering of this shirt was done by me by hand. Shirt has been washed to rinse excess tea from fabric. See details: detail 1, detail 2.

Irish Greyhounds
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This painting depicts a watery grey day on the Irish coast, and a man with his two greyhounds.
In working with watercolor, I try to keep the brushstrokes simple and fresh and do not go back and re-work or over-work what I've done. This painting is no exception, and is filled with many "happy accidents" where colors ran and bloomed out.

Chinese Horse
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
I have an obsession with horses, and I have a sub-obsession with Chinese horse sculptures.
I love their big, thick necks, the chiseled Roman-looking noses, the thick bodies and ballet-like legs.
I just love them.
Whenever people see my take on Chinese horses in my art, however, they either (if they are horse people) start pointing out how inaccurate I've depicted the fetlocks or the whithers and so on, completely missing the point. Or they aren't into horses at all and say something like "What's with the fat horse?"
Ah well.
I like them a lot, and this painting is one of my favorites. The sharp-edged colors, the thick oil paint, the linear work and the border colors finding their way into the actual horse itself. You'll appreciate the visual textures up close, the vibrant colors and brush work.
Really. You will.
