Discobolus

The Discobolus is one of my favorite statues, and that says a lot. A whole new world was opened up to me when I studied art history in college, an area of study I hadn't been exposed to until that time. I fell in love the the art of antiquity, and this was, as I mentioned one of my favorites.

Dying Gaul

written by Julie R. Neidlinger      0 comments      link this post

This is part of a series of additive and subtractive drawings I did, based on statuary from classical Greece and on.

I confess, I priced them high because I can't bear to think of selling them for anything less. I've had people make offers for them but I really treasure these drawings. I did them at a time when I was in a serious slump and the technique I developed using powdered graphite, erasers and more, seemed to almost magically appear. These drawings brought me out of that slump.

They mean a lot to me.

Materials: Graphite on paper
Size: About 30" X 17"
Other: Shipped without frame or mat
Price: $700

The wing from the statue "Nike of Samothrace" has always fascinated me for the strange reason that I am somewhat obsessed with wings. You can see that evidenced in other areas of my work as well.

This drawing, with its soft blues and flowing lines, is a particular favorite.

Something about the face of this maybe not-so-important bust of Meleagar has always caught my attention. It's as if he was doing what I find myself doing most of the time: functioning, but the mind is elsewhere.

Price: $100

Nazgul

written by Julie R. Neidlinger      0 comments      link this post

I've always been a big fan of Tolkein's Lord of the Rings, and so, I admit, I often catch myself making "fan art."

Some of it is pretty bad, yes. But not all. And this is an example of one of the good pieces.

The Nazbul were always intriguing to me, neither alive nor dead. And of course, there's the whole horse thing.

Horses are just awesome animals to draw.

In this piece, I hoped to capture a heavy sense of dread, a sense of solidity while at the same time, through the drips of the water mixed with charcoal, a sense of vapor or thinness. That is, I tried to capture them as being neither alive nor dead.

Materials: Charcoal and water on BFK Rives paper
Size: 22" X 30"
Other: Shipped without frame or mat
Price: SOLD

Balrog

Some of it is pretty bad, yes. But not all. And this is an example of one of the good pieces.

In this drawing, I wanted to capture the Balrog in a way that was highly stylized. I wanted the flames and fire to appear to be physically solid, imposing, and not just hot vapor.

Though you can't see all the detail in this small version of the drawing, the image is made up of many, many fine lines. One of the things I love to do is work with lines, with hatching, parellel lines...it just brings my obsessiveness out, making thousands of fine lines.

Materials: Pen and ink on paper
Size: 11" X 14"
Other: Shipped without frame or mat
Price: $90

Poseidon

written by Julie R. Neidlinger      1 comments      link this post

In keeping with the theme of stories, one can't leave out the importance of myth.

I've alwasy been drawn to Poseidon because, contrary to what one might think, he has a connection to horses. Though he is of the sea, his link to horses in mythology links him very much to land. In this piece, I attempted to capture the strength not only of the Poseidon, but of the sea. Visually, the strength comes from the color and texture used to hint at what is there, what is awash on the paper.

Materials: Mixed media (charcoal, acrylic, sewing, rice paper collage, gesso, acrylic mediums) on cotton rag paper.
Size: 44" x 30"
Other: This large piece will be shipped unframed, rolled up in a large tube.
Price: $300
