NEW ART: I've uploaded some "new" art (older pieces that I've not had online before). You can see them in the July archives.

I whipped this out on a scrap of paper, and so the corner tear you see is -- yes -- actually torn.
It was mainly an experiment in materials, prior to doing a larger work.

Fanor on the Guitar.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This is a painting based on a photo taken on a recent trip to Nicaragua. It shows Fanor, playing the guitar.
He played the guitar quietly, like he was whenever I saw him.
I suppose I could say more, but I think the painting should speak for itself at some point.

Orchestra
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
I love attending concerts for both the music and the opportunity to draw the musicians.
This image is an example of how I amuse myself with little challenges. In this case, I limited myself on how many times I could lift my pen off of the paper. You'll find in this painting/drawing that most of it is composed of a single winding, looping line.
It was fun. Really.

Jazz Bass Player
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
I am always fascinated when I watch musicians' hands. It's amazing how humans create music.
This painting was based on watching a jazz group play in Minneapolis, the bass player's hands plucking and moving about the strings of the bass like a smooth dance.
Materials: Watercolor paint, gesso and charcoal on paper
Size: 8" X 10"
Other: Shipped with no frame or mat
Price: SOLD

Cello
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
I play the violin (badly, I might add), but the sound of the cello has always been the one I prefer. In the hands of a good player I can almost swear the strings give off the sound of a human voice.
I was at a friend's house and noticed a beautiful cello propped up in the corner with some other decorative items all around it on the floor. I asked about the cello: whose it was, why it was there.
It turns out it was her daughters and since her daughter had grown up and moved away, the beautiful instrument was now being used as a decorative element.
It did, of course, look beautiful there in the corner, but I felt sad and bothered by it.
Such an instrument, silent, only used as something pretty to look at instead of singing like it should.
Yep, I'm a little sappy.
I wanted to paint a picture that featured the cello but not the player to show the strength of the cello on its own. However, I wanted to avoid the idea of the cello as being a merely decorative item. I had to figure out a way to show that the cello was in use without it being in use at the moment. I decided, after seeing a few cellos propped up against chairs at orchestra practice, that that pose was probably the best for what I had intended.
