Journal: Reporter journal.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This blank journal has front and back collaged covers made with copies and transfers from the doodles and jottings out of my actual notebooks from when I was a newspaper reporter.
I would frequently find myself sitting in meetings for hours on end, meetings with little happening but with interesting people to look at and caricature. I also found myself sketching bizarre stream-of-consciousness kinds of images based on some random comment or phrase from a meeting that clicked in my head and came out through the pen in my hand.
The covers are heavy-weight art paper with collaged imagery and decorative papers. Using watercolor, various papers, acrylic mediums, and ink, I transformed the basic pen and ink doodles into a colorful and complete image.
The binding is a basic plastic coil binder.
Inside, the journal is filled with a variety of papers that I have on hand in my art supplies. From lined to blank to sketch to colored to graph to tracing paper, you'll find each page to be a new experience, whether you intend to use the journal as a place to write, sketch, or glue your own ephemera inside. There are also two medium-size manila envelopes worked into the binding at the front and back, perfect for storing loose papers or notes.
The journal is 10" tall, 7.25" wide, and .25" thick. Variations in the cover, paper, etc. are part of its hand-made nature and are intentional. The cover is not smooth, but is an actual collage with varying thickness and texture.

Inner Machine
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
Maybe I read and watch too much Science Fiction, but the concept of the "inner machine" is one that rolls about in my mind.
This is the visual depiction of the idea. The "brain" of this painting is made up of the acrylic peelings from my old palettes, full of swirls and dobs, very much a high-raised three dimensional effect, adhered by pouring clear acrylic medium onto the painting. What this means is that you can't simply lay a piece of glass over this painting; you'll need a mat or other method to raise it from the surface. It also means it looks very unusual up close.
That's the inner machine I'm talking about.

Nude 1

The year we were finally able to draw and paint from live models was, without question, the year my art went from tight high-schooler type art to what I consider much stronger, more fluid work.
Perhaps there's something about drawing from life, the muscles and shadows they create, that open up the pencil and paintbrush on the paper.

Kristi

My friend Kristi often found herself the unfortunate guinea pig for me during college. Her face can be found in a number of my drawings and in my sketchbook. If I needed a model, there she was.
This painting is an abstraction on her face many times over.

Price: $100

This is a drawing based on a figure from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.
Michelangelo drew such large and muscular bodies, making them a great source for learning about anatomy for artists. Plus, it's just fun to draw from the masters.
Here again, I've focused more on line work than a realistic depiction.

This piece was more an experiment on how to capture the life and motion of a living being through lines. I have long had a love of line, and you can see it running throug all of my work.

Fence Horse
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
Here again is the fence I mentioned in an earlier description.
This is a drawing of a very beloved horse of mine, the last horse I really consider my true horse.
This is truly one of my favorite paintings and I have priced it high because I don't know that I could bear to part with it for anything less.
It's based on a photo taken the year before my horse died.

Egg Tempera Horse
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
"That doesn't look like any horse I've seen," horse aficionados will tell me.
No, that's because it's a painting and not a photograph.
What's fun about this image is not only the drawing itself, but the effect painting with watercolor and egg yolk have: a glorious, rich finish.
The nature of this updated version of the classic egg tempera method is one of transparency, gloss, multiple layers that affect the ones that follow, and a fresh, spontaneous feel.

Fat Chinese Horse 2
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
I have an obsession with horses, and I have a sub-obsession with Chinese horse sculptures.
I love their big, thick necks, the chiseled Roman-looking noses, the thick bodies and ballet-like legs.
I just love them.
Whenever people see my take on Chinese horses in my art, however, they either (if they are horse people) start pointing out how inaccurate I've depicted the fetlocks or the whithers and so on, completely missing the point. Or they aren't into horses at all and say something like "What's with the fat horse?"
Ah well.
Here's one such image I've created with an emphasis on muscles and spots. Sounds like fun, right?
Materials: Charcoal, water and gesso on paper
Size: 8.25" X 5"

Greyhounds on Striped Couch

I've done many greyhound paintings, depicting them in their various well-known positions.
As always, I like to use a lot of color.
This painting was based on a photo taken of my friend's dogs.

Greyhound Jester
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
Greyhounds are such characters, almost like pranksters, some of them. Hence, the idea of a jester.
Using scumbling techniques, I created this caricatured greyhound image, giving it a hazy look to the originally bright and hard-edged colors. There are two collage sections, originally part of another painting that I destroyed and used parts of in other artworks.

Greyhound and Chihuahua
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
My friend in college was the person who introduced me to greyhounds. I'd often accompany her when she walked her greys and one day, a guy pulled up along side us on the sidewalk. He hollered out his car window, wondering what kind of dog that was. Was it a huge Chihuahua, he wondered?
That struck me as hilarious, and still makes me laugh to this day.
UPDATE: This painting no longer exists. I was told by the buyer that her dog literally shredded and ate it while she was gone during the day. I guess I have critics in the animal world, too!

Foggy Trees
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
Trips to the Pacific Northwest always bring up magical memories of towering pines and the misty fog that seems to rise up from the green carpeted floor of these pine forests.
Rather than trying to capture the effect of the ghostly haze and the trees that seemed to rise out of thin wisp of existance by using fussy brushwork or complex layers, I inked the trees out quickly with a sharpened stick. Then, using a combination of water and sponging techniques, I scrubbed a water gesso and some faint tints of watercolor into the negative spaces, letting the ink from the trees pool and spread as it needed to.
The result is subdued and uncomplicated depiction of the early morning sun trying to push its way through the fog and trees to its home at the top of the sky.

Three Bottles 1
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This simple study of three bottles, done by first drawing them out on white paper with white wax (i.e. I couldn't see what I was drawing and so I was forced to observed and guess) turned out to be a fun painting.
I love the free feeling of it, the looseness of the final image.

Jazz Bass Player
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
I am always fascinated when I watch musicians' hands. It's amazing how humans create music.
This painting was based on watching a jazz group play in Minneapolis, the bass player's hands plucking and moving about the strings of the bass like a smooth dance.

Size: 8" X 10"
Other: Shipped with no frame or mat
