Irish Greyhounds

This painting depicts a watery grey day on the Irish coast, and a man with his two greyhounds.
In working with watercolor, I try to keep the brushstrokes simple and fresh and do not go back and re-work or over-work what I've done. This painting is no exception, and is filled with many "happy accidents" where colors ran and bloomed out.

Verdigris Greyhound

I've done many greyhound paintings, depicting them in their various well-known positions.
As always, I like to use a lot of color.
This painting is particularly difficult to capture in a photograph because of the use of metallic paint in it to create the look of weathered (verdigris) copper. It's a bit lighter than it appears here. I also used a blunt stick to create "engraved" lines into the thickly painted surface of the image, giving the painting a lot of wonderful visual and actual texture.

Greyhound Jester

Greyhounds are such characters, almost like pranksters, some of them. Hence, the idea of a jester.
Using scumbling techniques, I created this caricatured greyhound image, giving it a hazy look to the originally bright and hard-edged colors. There are two collage sections, originally part of another painting that I destroyed and used parts of in other artworks.

Greyhound and Chihuahua

My friend in college was the person who introduced me to greyhounds. I'd often accompany her when she walked her greys and one day, a guy pulled up along side us on the sidewalk. He hollered out his car window, wondering what kind of dog that was. Was it a huge Chihuahua, he wondered?
That struck me as hilarious, and still makes me laugh to this day.
UPDATE: This painting no longer exists. I was told by the buyer that her dog literally shredded and ate it while she was gone during the day. I guess I have critics in the animal world, too!

Stationery: Greyhound Series

You have to have an odd sense of humor to appreciate this set of greyhound cards.
These cards depict four original watercolor and colored pencil paintings I created in an attempt to make greyhound art that looked very different from what is often seen on the market.
This set of eight cards includes a depiction of a greyhound in a scene from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with both the greyhound and the donkey-headed character looking a bit confused; a scene of a greyhound and a farcical Greek chorus, making a literal and visual play on the idea with the greyhound having an equally confused expression as the odd characters in the Greek chorus speak; a greyhound in heaven where all the angels are winged and bunnies and both the bunnies and the greyhound are confused; and finally a greyhound in a cockroach position looking at a literal cockroach on the floor.
This set of eight cards, two of each image, comes with envelopes, and each card is blank inside, leaving you plenty of room for a quick message to the recipient.

My friend Sarah, who was the one that introduced me to greyhounds, told a funny story that illustrated the misconceptions people have about greyhounds.
While walking her fawn-colored greyhound down the sidewalk, a car pulled up and the driver rolled down his window.
"Is that a big chihuahua?" he asked.
The contrast between the two breeds is so startling that the imagery of that statement stuck with me. That is how this card arose, a black and white ink drawing with a delicate watercolor wash in the background.
