Purse: Striped Ties and Corduroy.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This fun-colored purse -- light blue! lime green! chocolate brown! -- is made from a favorite pair of corduroy pants that, happily, became too big for me. I loved the material though, a delicate blue with washed streaks of warm cream fading through. I couldn't let the material go to waste, so I decided to resurrect part of it for a purse.
Front: The front of the purse shows off the vintage necktie I've used for both the closure strap (velcro closure) and the purse strap. There is also the signature LP (Lone Prairie) leather tag. [view front of purse].
Back: The back of the purse [view back of purse] uses the front five-pocket layout from the pants. I've also created a larger pocket behind the entire section using a lime-green old cloth napkin. There is also an area for a pen to be attached where the pocket has been left slightly open.
Inside: The inside of the purse is lined with a pale blue shimmery material with a woven wave pattern. A pocket section, divided into two convenient pockets, lines the back of the inside of the purse, edged with contrasting chocolate brown antique seam facing and lime-green material. [view inside]
Detailing: The purse has a number of hand-stitched detailing, from the embroidered blanket-stitched edging on the purse strap ends, to the entire lining being hand-sewn into place. [view detail]
This purse is completely unique, made without a pattern, never to be exactly recreated in either fabric or stitching. It is fully hand-made. By me.
Materials: Corduroy, cotton, satin-like material, linen, leather, necktie.
Size: roughly 10.5" high, 11" wide, 3.5" deep; Shoulder strap 10.5" from shoulder to purse
Other: Spot wash. Do not machine wash.
Price: $45
Labels: accesories, gift, mom, purse

Purse: Yellow and Red Asian-themed Tote
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This soft and fun purse is made out of fleece fabric with satin and and other ribbon accents. In colors of wheat, yellow, and rich red, this little tote is not only sturdy, but heavily detailed with accents and linings sewn by hand.
Both the front and back designs are similar, featuring a handy pocket that is perfect for a cell phone or any other item you want to access quickly. Satin and tulle ribbon, in pale yellow and cream, border the top of this pocket with a raw, frayed edge peaking from behind. The edge of the pocket is lined with decorative elements, including hand-stitched flowers. [view the front of the purse | view the back of the purse | view detail]
Inside
Inside the purse, you'll find a bright red lining with a pocket that curves across one side. The inner edge of the lining is graced with a satin and tulle ribbon, hand-stitched in place. [view inside of the purse]
Purse strap: The purse strap is made of red cotton fabric and an elegantly patterned satin ribbon. It is triple stitched for strength and visual appeal, and finished with a golden yellow seam edging.
Sides: The sides have a unique gathered appearance. [view detail of side | view detail of side]
This purse is completely unique, made without a pattern, never to be exactly recreated in either fabric or stitching. It is fully hand-made. By me.
Materials: Fleece, cotton, satin and grosgrain ribbon, polyester stuffing, glass beads, linen.
Size: roughly 7.5" high, 10.5" wide, 3" deep; Shoulder strap 15" from shoulder to purse
Other: Spot wash, avoiding satin ribbon if possible. Do not machine wash. The dyes used in the ribbons and fabric may bleed -- spot wash only!

Journal: Reporter journal.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This blank journal has front and back collaged covers made with copies and transfers from the doodles and jottings out of my actual notebooks from when I was a newspaper reporter.
I would frequently find myself sitting in meetings for hours on end, meetings with little happening but with interesting people to look at and caricature. I also found myself sketching bizarre stream-of-consciousness kinds of images based on some random comment or phrase from a meeting that clicked in my head and came out through the pen in my hand.
The covers are heavy-weight art paper with collaged imagery and decorative papers. Using watercolor, various papers, acrylic mediums, and ink, I transformed the basic pen and ink doodles into a colorful and complete image.
The binding is a basic plastic coil binder.
Inside, the journal is filled with a variety of papers that I have on hand in my art supplies. From lined to blank to sketch to colored to graph to tracing paper, you'll find each page to be a new experience, whether you intend to use the journal as a place to write, sketch, or glue your own ephemera inside. There are also two medium-size manila envelopes worked into the binding at the front and back, perfect for storing loose papers or notes.
The journal is 10" tall, 7.25" wide, and .25" thick. Variations in the cover, paper, etc. are part of its hand-made nature and are intentional. The cover is not smooth, but is an actual collage with varying thickness and texture.
Price: $25

Porcelain piggy bank.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This porcelain piggy bank was inked free-hand with no pattern, then hand-painted with oil paints.
A plastic stopper on the underside allows you to remove your money without destroying a perfectly good pig.
Design work is original and unique, hand signed on the bottom.
This pig is small, about 4" X 3" X 3", and the only one of its kind! (He, uh, also comes with a few quarters inside. Quarters do not come out the bottom hole.)
See details: detail 1, detail 2, detail3.
Price: $95

Purse: Stripe the First
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This soft and fun purse is made out of fleece fabric with satin and grosgrain ribbon accents. There's a little bit of linen in the eyes, too.
This is Stripe, so named for the stripe down his back, which is, of course, seen on the back of the purse.
Free-form sewing on the handle, Stripe, and body of the purse make contrasting and matching thread serve as more than mere construction, but much the same way lines in a drawing sketch out a subject.
Stripe's mouth is perfect for holding a cell phone or pack of tissues. Stripe's front is lightly padded to give his body a little...body. His lower lip is matching satin ribbon hand-stitched in place. The inside of the purse is lined with red cotton and has a double-layer open pocket attached to the back wall of the interior.
This purse is completely unique, made without a pattern, never to be exactly recreated in either fabric or stitching. It is fully hand-made. By me.

Ballet Purse
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
Though not really a purse for ballet or ballerinas only, the use of the pink ribbon is reminiscent of ballet slippers and hence the name.
This purse is one of many bags I've sewn, all in the "no pattern, no repeats, no plan" vein of thinking.
I found to pieces of old material and some quilted scraps (probably a mattress pad at one point) that were cut and ready to be turned into potholders by my grandmother years ago. Laying the material out on the counter and positioning the quilted pieces, I came up with a vague sense of what I wanted to create and began sewing.
My goal? I wanted a pieced-together inside-out looking purse. I used old seam bindings, ribbon, roughly-turned hems, aged pink and green paisley dress fabric to line it, and devil-may-care stitching to create this truly unique tote-purse. The sides have the quilted fabric encased behind the thin pink material, giving off an ever-so-slight quilted look.
Because of an apparent stain near the ribbon knot on one of the handle straps, I'm reducing the price from $50 to $40.
All crazy stitching and pattern development is intentional, and not grounds for a refund. Since the material used is quite old, you will want to be gentle with this purse and not load it up with a laptop or pet dog. Handwash and hang to dry only, if needed.
You like unique? There's only one of this purse on the planet. And it can be yours.
