Woman Sewing.

I based this image on a few old photographs of a relative. I combined one photo's background, and pulled in the figure from another.
At one time I had done a lot of charcoal drawing, but it had been a while and so I decided to delve back into it and get a little practice with this drawing.
Charcoal is one of my favorite mediums to work with, since it allows not only possibilities with line work as well as shading through smudging, but works well as a gray wash with the addition of water.
Materials: Charcoal on heavy paper

Russ and Janet

My sister Janet wanted me to caricature her and her husband for their wedding album. I don't know why...but I was happy to oblige.
I've never been one to do a lot of caricatures, so this was a new experience, but it actually does look like them.

I whipped this out on a scrap of paper, and so the corner tear you see is -- yes -- actually torn.
It was mainly an experiment in materials, prior to doing a larger work.

Using scraps from a friend's prints (which she had torn up and was about to dispose of when I asked if I could have them) and various materials, this collage painting came to be.
I bet you'd like me to tell you the story behind it.
Tough bet.

Emmet and Jenny.

This was a commissioned piece based on a few photographs and a request to put them together to show the small child and the dog looking out across the yard.
Obviously, the dog was not actually blue, but the client requested certain color elements and favored the bright, broad-stroked style of some of my other dog portraits.

Cody and Elmo.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
My nephew Cody (who is now much, much older than he was when I drew this image) loved Elmo. This image is based on a photograph.
For his fourth birthday, I bought him a huge Elmo. My sister was worried that he'd be a bit frightened when he pulled the monstrous red thing from the box, but, as you see, he wasn't.
This image is a good example of what my take on commissioned work would look like.

Goodbye Church
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
Some people take this image to be a negative statement on church or religion or the state of pastors.
That was not my intention, though the name, "Goodbye Church", suggests a leaving.
At the time (I painted this back in 2002), I was thinking about things I'd like to leave behind in my life in regards to "religiousity" and habit that seemed to block the view of the cross.
In this painting, the cross is atop the steeple, and the figure can't see it until he steps out of the shadow of the building and is far enough away, outside, to look up.
Step out of the shadow, and look up.

Inner Machine
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
Maybe I read and watch too much Science Fiction, but the concept of the "inner machine" is one that rolls about in my mind.
This is the visual depiction of the idea. The "brain" of this painting is made up of the acrylic peelings from my old palettes, full of swirls and dobs, very much a high-raised three dimensional effect, adhered by pouring clear acrylic medium onto the painting. What this means is that you can't simply lay a piece of glass over this painting; you'll need a mat or other method to raise it from the surface. It also means it looks very unusual up close.
That's the inner machine I'm talking about.

Men in Fog
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
The title of this piece has often inspired some rather derogatory comments by women frustrated with their husbands or boyfriends.
"Aren't all men in a fog?"
I don't know anything about that. This painting isn't based on anything in particular. I painted it straight out of my head, with no source material to go by.

Discobolus

The Discobolus is one of my favorite statues, and that says a lot. A whole new world was opened up to me when I studied art history in college, an area of study I hadn't been exposed to until that time. I fell in love the the art of antiquity, and this was, as I mentioned one of my favorites.

Dying Gaul
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This is part of a series of additive and subtractive drawings I did, based on statuary from classical Greece and on.
I confess, I priced them high because I can't bear to think of selling them for anything less. I've had people make offers for them but I really treasure these drawings. I did them at a time when I was in a serious slump and the technique I developed using powdered graphite, erasers and more, seemed to almost magically appear. These drawings brought me out of that slump.
They mean a lot to me.

Nude 1

The year we were finally able to draw and paint from live models was, without question, the year my art went from tight high-schooler type art to what I consider much stronger, more fluid work.
Perhaps there's something about drawing from life, the muscles and shadows they create, that open up the pencil and paintbrush on the paper.
