Woman Sewing.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
I based this image on a few old photographs of a relative. I combined one photo's background, and pulled in the figure from another.
At one time I had done a lot of charcoal drawing, but it had been a while and so I decided to delve back into it and get a little practice with this drawing.
Charcoal is one of my favorite mediums to work with, since it allows not only possibilities with line work as well as shading through smudging, but works well as a gray wash with the addition of water.
Materials: Charcoal on heavy paper
Size: approx. 11" X 15"
Other: Shipped without frame or mat
Price: $25
Labels: drawings, figurative

Russ and Janet
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
My sister Janet wanted me to caricature her and her husband for their wedding album. I don't know why...but I was happy to oblige.
I've never been one to do a lot of caricatures, so this was a new experience, but it actually does look like them.

I whipped this out on a scrap of paper, and so the corner tear you see is -- yes -- actually torn.
It was mainly an experiment in materials, prior to doing a larger work.

Cody and Elmo.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
My nephew Cody (who is now much, much older than he was when I drew this image) loved Elmo. This image is based on a photograph.
For his fourth birthday, I bought him a huge Elmo. My sister was worried that he'd be a bit frightened when he pulled the monstrous red thing from the box, but, as you see, he wasn't.
This image is a good example of what my take on commissioned work would look like.
Materials: Ink, watercolor and gesso on heavy paper
Size: approx. 22" X 40"
Other: Shipped without frame or mat, possibly rolled in a protective tube
Price: $75
Labels: commissioned, drawings, figurative, mixed media

Autumn Landscape.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
After the fields are harvested, there comes a few weeks in fall where the sun seems to consistently fall across the gold wheat stubble just right. The trees are the only vertical thing happening out on those fields, with the horizon and the horizontal overpowering all else.
Everything seems on fire, except, maybe, the overcast sky.

Size: 8.5" X 16"
Other: Shipped without frame or mat, temporarily mounted on foam core with protective covering
Price: $40

Bookplate: Mystery Pair
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
These two bookplates are perfect for the reader who likes a good mystery. Sold as a set, the bookplates function on their own but provide a unique "connection" to their counterpart.
Bookplates have a rich history. By using these, you will, essentially, have your own signatory bookplate.

Discobolus
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
The Discobolus is one of my favorite statues, and that says a lot. A whole new world was opened up to me when I studied art history in college, an area of study I hadn't been exposed to until that time. I fell in love the the art of antiquity, and this was, as I mentioned one of my favorites.

Dying Gaul
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
This is part of a series of additive and subtractive drawings I did, based on statuary from classical Greece and on.
I confess, I priced them high because I can't bear to think of selling them for anything less. I've had people make offers for them but I really treasure these drawings. I did them at a time when I was in a serious slump and the technique I developed using powdered graphite, erasers and more, seemed to almost magically appear. These drawings brought me out of that slump.
They mean a lot to me.
Materials: Graphite on paper
Size: About 30" X 17"
Other: Shipped without frame or mat
Price: $700

Nude 1
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
The year we were finally able to draw and paint from live models was, without question, the year my art went from tight high-schooler type art to what I consider much stronger, more fluid work.
Perhaps there's something about drawing from life, the muscles and shadows they create, that open up the pencil and paintbrush on the paper.

The wing from the statue "Nike of Samothrace" has always fascinated me for the strange reason that I am somewhat obsessed with wings. You can see that evidenced in other areas of my work as well.

Something about the face of this maybe not-so-important bust of Meleagar has always caught my attention. It's as if he was doing what I find myself doing most of the time: functioning, but the mind is elsewhere.
