Image Transfer Techniques: Photocopy transfer I.

A method for roughened image transfers.

Materials:

It is important to do this method in an area that is well ventilated. Acetone is a potent solvent. Gloves are also recommended to prevent your skin from absorbing the acetone. Your photocopied images need to be reversed, especially if there is writing in the image you will be transferring. This method will present a roughened image, with a grainy feel to it.

Steps:

  1. Place the blank paper that you will be transferring the image onto on the table. Then arrange your photocopied image on top of this paper, image (ink) side down. Do only one image at a time.

  2. With one hand holding the photocopy down, dampen the clean rag with acetone and rub a corner of the photocopy image. Set the rag down, and burnish the back of the newly dampened area with the hard metal object. This will help make your transfer image more solid and detailed, as the ink will transfer better. Move onto the area next to what you have just done, and repeat, doing this for the entire photocopy. Acetone will dry very quickly, so work only in small sections. Always hold the photocopy down with one hand to prevent it from moving. You can see how well your image is transferring by pulling back a corner to check your progress.
  3. When the entire photocopy has been transferred, peel back the photocopy. Your image should remain on the paper.
