I have reached a point in my life where I read very little new fiction. Most of my reading is directed at histories and politics. The books I am currently recomending are "Dean Acheson: a Life in the Cold War" by Robert Beisner, "The Forgotten Man" by Amity Shlaes, "Almost a Miracle" by John Ferling, and "So Sad to Fall in Battle" by Kumiko Kakehashi. Each of these books give new insights into areas of history that are my passion. The Shlaes book in particular offers fresh insights into the Great Depression by focusing on individual Americans rather than on the familiar New Deal programs. Beisner's biography of Dean Acheson is so well written that you feel you are present at some of the defining moments of the early days of the Cold War. Ferling brings home how precarious the struggle for our independence was. And finally, Kakehashi's book is very moving as you get to know the Japanese general who was charged with the defense of Iwo Jima.
I wouldn't consider any of these books beach or poolside reads, but I think they are all books that will challenge the reader's preconceived ideas and, perhaps, generate a desire to delve further into these topics.
Of course, having taught history for more years than I care to admit, I may be somewhat biased.
