TPS reports.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 3 comments link this postI'm in a coffee shop trying to study, and at the table next to me are six women discussing their workplace. Evidently, there are some attitude problems at their workplace, and they seem to be trying to come up with a program to curb employee gossip, bad attitudes, and, in general, come up with a way to improve it.
The best way, as far as assured results, would be to pull a Milton, and burn it down.
Some of the ideas these well-meaning ladies have come up with are:
- posters in the break room encouraging positive attitude (as if anything good comes from posting something in the break room)
- giving away peanut butter cups, and other such rewards, based on the good things and positive attitudes exhibited by the employees
- Catchy catch-phrases to remind everyone of the hoped-for positive attitude
...matches.
Get the matches.
A poster like that is asking to be defaced with a Sharpie.
TPS, indeed.

I tried posting to this last night but received a very rude error message and then I gave up. I don't quite remember what I wrote but it was STUNNING! Here's the best I can do now in the a.m....
Julie, all you did was spy? Maybe you should have given them another perspective?
As I have worked with mostly women in healthcare or "the arts," it does seem that women have a problem with gossip, bad attitudes and the most serious problem of trying to solve the first two which then only leads to more gossip and bad attitudes. The few men I've worked with never seemed to gossip that much but sometimes they did have bad attitudes.
Is gossip a female trait? What's up with that? Or is that guys don't really care about other people?

I have been thinking a lot about that, the whole women/gossip thing, and what I've noticed when I've worked jobs with women vs. men.
I think a blog post is in order.

I thought that having 4 younger sisters would have prepared me for anything. Having worked with mostly women the last 10 years has really been an experience.
