We still have hockey.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 2 comments link this postA friend emailed me the link to a video that, if you're from North Dakota, you'll at least understand and, if you're an NDSU fan like I am, you'll find it hilarious. I chuckled out loud several times. Nothing like a little more fuel on the UND-NDSU rivalry.
GO BISON!
UPDATE: The video has been pulled, obviously. In the grand tradition of stuffed shirts that can' take a joke, it has been removed. It wasn't, however, the first effort at using that video clip to make a bit of a hockey joke. There is another video (and others, since it has become rather common on the internet to use that clip, apparently). It isn't, however, as funny. I have a strong feeling that the real reason it upset people in high places wasn't so much the Hitler aspect, but because of the personal pot-shots taken at college administration officials. Perhaps Kupchella didn't want anyone to know he frosted his hair. Tough to say.

Fantastic --
This works for me on several levels. Of course, there is the history part. We happen to be right in the middle of studying WWII. Then there is the hockey part. I haven't coached in four years, but I'm still passionate.
One of my student's dad played for UND in the early 1980s. In fact, he scored the winning overtime goal against Michigan State in the 1984 playoffs at Fargo for a third place finish. His name is Dean Barsness, and his son John is quite the hockey player, too. He's small but quick and a gifted scorer.
Anyway, here's a You Tube link to the video of that goal.

Sorry that it's UND.

Funny thing about all the uproar is that this isn't the first video to use that particular clip. It just happens to play to a particular situation, especially a rivalry, and thus it got used here. Still funny, just not terribly original.
The not-so-funny thing is how everybody's peeing themselves with fear about offending anyone. That seems to be the cardinal sin in today's politically correct, secular humanist society.
I'm not buying into it, of course. Offending someone or being divisive is a door I'll gladly kick open... especially in the process of sticking to my principles.
