Why North Dakota?

I just love reading stories about people who love North Dakota, as opposed to the plethora of native North Dakotan young people, usually in college on their parent's dime, griping and spending their time blogging about how they just can't stand the people, the mindset, the politics, the "lack of culture" or whatever else they think is wrong, basing so much blame on geography rather than the person in the geography.

I've gotten old enough to appreciate the positives this state offers.

You could say I'm an old fogy. I wouldn't mind. I like to travel, all over the world, but it's made more enjoyable knowing I can come back home, here.

North Dakota is fast turning into a "come back/come to" state for people who have gotten the anger out of their system, had a chance to live elsewhere for a while, or have a family -- anything that has suddenly changed their priorities in life.

A recent contest, called "Why I Luv ND", had people send in short essays on why they love North Dakota. The winners seemed to mainly consist of people who moved her from California or NYC or other places. I'm not sure if that was part of the qualification for the contest, or if the contest creators were looking to show outside interest in the state as some sort of proof to entice other outsiders to become insiders. Either way, I enjoyed reading them. Check them out here.

Thinking of moving to ND? Got some links for you right here.

::If you're looking for online writing detailing the topic of "Why I Hate ND", just find some North Dakota high school or college bloggers in hate with the world, mistaking it for hate with the small state. Or find one of those people who have never stopped detailing their dislike of the state in which they live but never bothered to pack their bags and get out of here, to the extreme distress of the rest of us who are tired of hearing about all that "other green grass."::

I love North Dakota because of you.

Do you love Garden Grove because of me? People who don't live in GG call it "Garbage Grove."

I confess to not knowing enough about Garden Grove to either insult nor recommend it.

I'm sorry.

I live there. Isn't that enough?

Oh how presumptuous on my part to think you'd like it because of me.

Um, um, uh....

I love Garden Grove!

(There.)

With the exception of a short stay in the Twin Cities, I've spent my entire life in rural areas — South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, and finally, North Dakota. And I do mean finally. I liked those other places, but I'm staying here.

And you're right about the disgruntled kids who have never lived real life anywhere else. I had to get the cities out of my system and grow up to know that "where the action is" is a nice place to visit, but it's no place to live.
