Blogathon 2007: Chapter 3.

The cherry on the entire year -- the cherry being one of three fruits still in existence from ancient Earth -- was a little mishap which involved mistaking alcohol for the benign, pilot-friendly synthetic version.

Really, not such a big deal, since his crew or brother Bob, his first in command, could fly well without him being coherent. No, not a big deal unless it happened during the Admiral's Christmas party.

Christmas was one of three still-observed holidays from ancient Earth.

The Admiral's wife was the wife only a blind man could love. A blind man, or, as in the Admiral's case (which was why he was the Admiral and not a pilot), a man missing one eye with his remaining eye being more for decoration and intimidation rather than clearly seeing.

Rogers hadn't meant to drink alcohol -- he hadn't touched the stuff since the incident in which an alien had shoved a knife into his heart and caused him to suffer through all kinds of surgery which could only be explained to friends and well-wishers by starting a story with the words "well...I got drunk and then..."

That was an embarrassment, and he had never intended to drink and lose control again.

From what others told him, he approached the Admiral's wife and gave a frank and brutally honest description of her and compared her to the dog that she was holding, with the dog coming out ahead in both the looks and smell department.

Getting on the wrong side of the Admiral's wife meant getting on the wrong side of the Admiral, and that usually meant, as all pilots found out sooner or later, a little test that was meant to take him out of the picture.

And now here he was, being tested again. Literally. The test of all tests, the final frontier final. No one had made it out alive.

No.

This was not his year.

I see you have some theological stuff in this years blogathon entry, what with all the trinities in your posts. I am no dummy . . . I see these things.
