Blogathon 2007: Chapter 1.

This had not been his year. Or whatever method of time a person would like to use to calculate sheer misery and bad happenstance.
He preferred year; it had a nice, ancient ring to it.
This had been a year like no other for Captain Bob Rogers.
The start was climactic, though Rogers would admit it had stayed steady-on since then.
He'd lost a fine lieu tent to an unsightly alien accident which had instituted the new starship policy of always watching where you were stepping. She'd sunk into a pit of shapeless black, the alien planet evidently home to some sort of tar-like shadow creatures who lay in wait in plain sight, disguised as shadows.
He and his brother Bob had stood by helplessly, fire their weapons into little more than black liquid vapor, watching as Lieutenant Gar disappeared before their eyes.
Then there was the incident with an alien race that had refused to honor a treaty, meaning he'd been sent in to not only not honor the original treaty, but crumple it up and use it as target practice. The incident hadn't gone as fast and winningly as he'd hoped, and in the end, it had made him insist, quite shamefacedly, that his captain's chair be Scotchguarded, one of only three ancient Earth technologies to still be used today.

I remember that tar creature from Next Generation. Killed Tasha Yar.

Every year, Eric, every year.
Scuba diving.
I DON'T HAVE LITTLE SCUBA COSTUMES FOR MY DOLLS.
I knew you'd bring that up again.
