Nicaragua Art: The Great Cathedral
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 2 comments link this post::I usually post all my art stuff over on...my art blog. But I post my Nicaragua stuff here.::
[This post is in progress; it will change]
I'm working on a few paintings from photos and sketches from my recent trip to Nicaragua. This one is of the Great Cathedral in Leon.
The Great Cathedral is a building that has gotten under my skin ever since I started going to Nicaragua. I love cathedrals; I loved looking at the floor plans and diagrams of the Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals while studying art history in college. I had a sketchbook (since ruined when the basement apartment I was staying in flooded) filled with drawings of cathedrals I someday wanted to see (Chartres, Notre Dame, Florence, Salisbury, Santiago de Compostela, etc.).
The Cathedral in Leon is very beautiful. I never seem to be able to take enough photos of it, make enough quick sketches in my journal of it. You'd think it wouldn't have taken me so long to getting around to painting it.
I move in a different timeline, sometimes.
So here is a painting, perhaps one of many, perhaps one of one. I don't know. For those of you interested, you can see it come together bit by bit, one photo at a time.
For those of you not interested in art, this post won't bore you with art details. If you are curious and want to read a little explanation about what I'm doing and what I'm using, or how I go about making a painting, you can read that over on my art and writing blog.

I move to Granada, Nicaragua to live for the foreseeable future tomorrow.
Can't wait.
Glad you enjoyed it there too.

I am always amazed at how you can take a blank canvas and make it into something so beautiful and expressionistic. Thanks for showing the step-by-step, too. My work is so tight and I'm trying to "loosen up"-- seeing your process is very inspirational. Look forward to more of your Nicaraguan art! :o)
