Dove saddled up his horse and headed out of town. This time he took a more round-about way of reaching the summit that overlooked the valley where the Lomax ranch sprawled out.

Cutting in across the hillside, Dove rode in low and was unseen by what he knew were the hired eyes of Solitaire.

All looked fine on the western front, but Dove knew he had to chance it and ride in to see if Bliss was there. She might be laying low.

All gold was fool's gold, he thought again, his horse carefully picking its way across the gulch where the valley met the rocks.

Remaining alert, he scouted the outlying property from the safety of the trees, trying to ascertain if anyone was posted to watch for him. He found no sign of anyone, including Bliss, making him both relieved and worried.

Bliss was nowhere to be found. Her ranch was fine, there was no sign of struggle, but there was also no sign of Bliss.

He decided to head to the caves. Perhaps she'd gone looking for him, unaware he'd headed back into town to poke a stick in a hornet's nest.
