"It was enough that I did it, whoever it was for, or why."
Lily went on, as if he weren't there, as if he hadn't spoken a word. "Don't you remember the yelling, the shooting? 'Shoot 'em all and let God sort 'em out' I remember one yelling over and over, like it was a party." She laughed. "That's a fine theory but when his day came, how do you think God did the sorting on account of all his shooting?"
"If I remember, his day came hard and fast."
"You think of them as Ruby Hills because of love. Everyone else thinks of them because of all the blood. Maybe there's not too much difference, especially for you."
Dove shook his head. "That kind of evil, the kind of the Shadow Riders, that kind has to be killed. It can't be convinced or distracted, only cut down."
"Even if it's your own blood?"
"Especially so. My father pulled that trigger himself eight years before I did."
"Then you will kill anyone."
"I was the law. I didn't get to have mercy on how I carried it out. God --"
"--will sort it out. I know."
