"What happened was no less than Mountain Meadows, except with the Kiowa and with the Shadow Riders instead," he said. "We were on the tail end of something planned long outside of our doing."

Lily fell silent.

"Did she still have the necklace," he asked, trying to not think about the massacre, trying to think of the few thoughts of Garnet as the woman he loved.

"She did. A beautiful red ruby. She had it until the end. It was no match for the red of her blood."

"My father and I were never the same person."

"You weren't a Shadow Rider then, I know that," Lily said. "I saw my family, my neighbors, cut down and you weren't there doing the cutting or shooting. But if you ride with the outlaws, you die with the outlaws. And you rode with them once."

"It's got to count for something, the choice I made for a different life. I did it for Ruby."

"You should've done it for you."
