Blogathon 2006: Chapter 1.

Dove had been shaking the dust of towns that didn't want him from his boots his entire life. This looked to be just another such town, the usual flat-faced buildings lining a worn stip of dust that passed for a street in the dry season and a muck pit when it rained.

He didn't like the looks of the newspaper office, baring the name of the town he now rode into. The gelding he rode shook his head, snorting at the dust and perhaps the reality of a town named Crossfire Trail.

No, Dove didn't like it one bit. Such a name didn't bode well for people not interested in choosing sides.

Next to the newspaper office was a small adobe building, the barred windows indicating it a waiting place for all the men that made their momma cry before their necks were stretched. Having the newspaper next to the lawman seemed folly to Dove. There was no news in murder and hanging.

Crossfire Trail as in the book by Louis L'Amour? When I googled to confirm that, I see the movie version was directed by the same guy who directed Lonesome Dove (Simon Wincer). Do the references never end?
