I won the lottery this week!

OK, no, but I did take a book from a church without paying for it.

(suspenseful pause here.)

I was visiting my friend Molly's church last Sunday and there was a table with hand-lettered sign that read "Free Books." That's the bait people, that's the bait.

I skidded to a stop in front of it, the world around me stopping, only the books and I existing. Lo and behold, there among the aged 1970's and 80's covers was treasure: Death in the City by Francis Schaeffer.

Were these people crazy, I wondered as I yanked the book off of the table, gripping it and looking furtively around me. How could they not have snatched up this book, this literary gold, this gem, this beckoning treasure! My hands clenched tighter around my find. A Francis Schaeffer book sitting out in the open on a Free Books table, unscathed!

"Molly, can I take this book?" I asked my friend, my voice low lest a real member of the church would suddenly want the loot. My eyes flicked left and right, narrowing. When books are on the line, I revert to instinct. This was battle conditions! I could practically hear the book screaming out to be read, to enrich minds everywhere.

"They're free. Take it."

"Are you sure? I don't go to church here."

"Take the book."

I took the book. I won the lottery! I took a book out of a church I don't even attend!

I have never used so many exclamation points in my life, but for Schaeffer, I'll make an exception!
