Being a mere 1.0 is just fine with me.

My friend Molly is going to be running the half-marathon in Fargo next weekend. She nonchalantly sends me emails with comments like "I'm going to go run eight miles now" or "Better get in my ten miles."
I can't even fathom that.
Regarding her running in this marathon, she shrugged off my hero-worship with a comment on her running, delegating it to the not-impressive slow-and-steady category.
"I don't run 13.1 miles fast," she pretty much said.
That's funny. I don't run 13.1 miles period. As if the speed of running 13.1 miles would lessen my unfathomability. Unfathomness. Unfathomiocrity. I don't know - pick one.
I am going to be there to drive her to the start and to cheer her on, and since I design T-shirts for part of my living, I said I would make us both a funny shirt. Hence, the design above. We both have an identical shirt, although mine will be sweat-free whereas her's...I can't imagine.
What does 13.1 do to a 50/50 shirt?
I've started my daily summer run-walk program in which I run one mile, mourn again at my love for chocolate, and walk the other three around a quarter of land.
I know a lot of runners listen to music when they run. When I was in college and cranked out a mile on the treadmill before morning class, the people around me always had headphones on. I just counted numbers and tried to block out the gross sounds coming from the guys in the weightlifting area.
Breathe two steps exhale two steps breathe two steps exhale two steps deer carcass two steps that's a half mile two steps tree two steps that's three-quarters two steps done - this is my own inner, natural "iPod." That, and a weird habit of reciting patterns of numbers and Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven in rhythm with the running, get me through my daily measley mile. Some people put on headphones, I count numbers and find a way to cram stanza's of Poe into some sort of pattern.
Running is a head game, isn't it?
Molly, version 13.1
Julie, version 1.0
I'm just fine with that.

You know, running/walking 4 miles a day is still pretty awesome - so give yourself a pat on the back! That's sooooo much more than most people are doing. Me ... I just walk about 30 minutes 4-5 times a week. So, see how good you are doing? :) Blessings.
