(Get this for your own site.)Church and (the) State (of it).
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
A recent blog post which lightly reviewed Shane Claiborne's new book, Jesus For President: Politics for Ordinary Radicals, caught the attention of a reader and writer for the North Dakota State University newspaper, The Spectrum.
I'm pointing it out here because I like to keep track and make note of when anything Lone Prairie gets featured in various media outlets, but beyond that shallow reason, I highly recommend reading the article, which is featured on the writer's blog. It's good stuff.
A few quotes from my blog post made it into the article, but there are some other good thoughts on the concept of the state of the church today. A particularly blunt -- and true -- statement that, in some sense sums up the blinders that are slowly being peeled off of the eyes of some Christians, is the following quote:
The Disney corporation was boycotted on the basis of the attempted indoctrination of children with immoral concepts, but the Walmart corporation is overlooked by "frugal Christians" even though most products offered by Walmart are made by individuals who have the most basic of their human rights violated by tyrannical governments or poor standards of living on a daily basis. My quote has to do with my experiences in Nicaragua.
Want to do something?
If you'd like to help the organization I work with, in regards to Nicaragua, I can tell you they would gladly, gladly, gladly accept donations. You can do that here, or, if you want to help the North Dakota branch that I'm a part of, you can do that here. 100 percent of all money gets to the people of Nicaragua; the organization is staffed by volunteers.
Food prices have shot up, which affect the poor. We were shocked at the price of rice back in January, when we were distributing food. Along with food, gas prices have increased and caused unrest in the country.
So, go read the article. Reconsider what you support with your dollar and spending habits, and think about supporting the people who really could use your help.

Byword and the St. Ignace lighthouse.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
The band Byword, based in Northern Idaho, stumbled upon my sketch of the St. Ignace lighthouse, which I drew while on vacation last year.
Gotta love Google image search, sometimes.
The sketch is actually quite small; I made it using a simple black ink pen in a fairly small journal that I'd purchased at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, propped up on the railing that led to the lighthouse.
It's what I'd call a gesture drawing, the loose kind where the pen doesn't leave the surface of the page much and I tend to worry less about accurate perspective or details and, instead, go for the main message.
The devil is in the details, you know, and I don't want to deal with that.
Anyway, if you happen to see someone walking around with a shirt on that features this image...now you know.
And one more thing.
Definitely check out Byword's web site and their music. They're on CD Baby, too.
It's good stuff.

The Hobbit needs a map.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
For those curious as to some of the places to find my work, you can find it on the program of a theater production of The Hobbit. I've had my art used in a variety of ways, but this is the first time it's appeared on a program for a theater production.
The image in use is my rendition of Thror's Map, which you can see here.
I'd drawn it a few years ago, on faux parchment paper using an ink-dip pen. I then aged it with colored pencils and used a mixture of brown and yellow ink to get the faded dwarf writing effect.
Anyway, I am happy to see such a fine story put on the stage by great kids. You can find out more about the theater production and group here.

Press-ready bio.
written by Julie R. Neidlinger 0 comments link this post
Julie R. Neidlinger (b. 1974)
Julie R. Neidlinger's creative career began as a child, with a never-ending love for drawing and writing and making things. No art classes were offered at her elementary or high school in Starkweather, North Dakota, though she had the opportunity to take part in summer art classes and the occasional artist-in-residence that visited the school.
One such artist-in-residence that had an impact on her, and encourage her as a young student, was Bicky Bender. During her junior year in high school, Julie decided to attend Minnesota State University - Moorhead to pursue a degree in art.
First, though, there was a detour. Her freshman year of college was spent in the heart of Minneapolis at North Central University. The following four years found her immersed in the art and art history departments at Minnesota State University - Moorhead.
Following graduation, she moved back to the family farm and still pursued her art and writing, but supplemented her career with a wide variety of jobs ranging from photographer to journalist to art teacher. She formed her creative company Lone Prairie Art Works in the late 1990's, gradually adding name and branding to it as it grew.
She continues to specialize in the creative fields, which include writing, drawing, and music, all from the home-base of a North Dakota farm.

If you're looking for a shorter bio... you can thank my friend Corrine, a published author, who wrote this bio because I found it difficult to write about myself. She's been very generous in describing me.
Julie R. Neidlinger is both a writer and a visual artist. She writes, she paints, and she photographs -- but no matter what medium she chooses, she excels in finding and describing the universal themes that connect North Dakota to the larger, outside world. She has written for a small newspaper, but she is probably best known as the voice of Lone Prairie, a hugely popular website and blog that ranked as one of the top 400 blogs in the "TruthLaidBear" ecosystem at one time. She lives on a farm near Hampden, N.D., and she has a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Moorhead State University.
