Box.net -- worth the trouble?

written by Julie R. Neidlinger      7 comments      link this post

I've been using Scribd.com pretty heavily for making documents available to my readers, but I just came across a cool little widget on another blog. It's from Box.net, and I've not seen it before. I'm curious as to how reliable it is, if it sucks up bandwidth, slows down a site...anyone out there using it?

I could see a lot of uses on this site. Scribd doesn't have such a widget that I'm aware of. I currently link to specific folders at Scribd, which works, but you know, who doesn't like a cool widget?

I love widgets . . . too much. That;s why I have been removing some from my main blog lately to speed up it's loading speed. I do not think that using widgets that link to external sites like box.net suck up your bandwidth (unlike directly loading docs into your blog host for download), but they can slow down the load time.

Having said that, I do use the box.net widget on my church's web page (www.fumcop.org), and though it is the last thing to load, it seems to load pretty fast (of course this webpage is on wordpress.com, so it tends to load fast anyway).

I do like that the fact that I can upload documents in any format into box.net - pdf, doc, wpd, jpg, etc. . . and people can then download in the format I intended them to be used in.

Try SMEStorage.com - they let you use your own S3 account through their OpenS3 beta and their platform is also integrated with Scribd.

I was actually going to email you and ask you directly -- you're kind of like the Widget King and I figured you'd know about it.

I'm considering it. It could be really useful...

I've not heard of SMEStorage.com -- I'll look into that. Since I have so much on Scribd, that could be useful.

Widget King . . . one could be called worse things I suppose.

Heck, who am I kidding? I have been called worse.

Hi Julie. I'm the Community Manager for Box.net and came across your post. If you give Box.net a try, I know you'll find it very useful, intuitive and very reliable. And it also provides seamless integration with third party apps from Scribd, Zoho, Picnik and lots of other cool services. If you need info, just visit www.Box.net or call us at 877-BOX-6736.
