Patron.

This is an interesting blog post, the idea of finding an investor for potential college students to counteract the outrageous cost of tuition.

You know, like....a patron. Where is a de' Medici when you need one?

Patronize me, without being patronizing, I say. (Is that possible?)

I'm still waiting to find out that some wealthy relative that I had no idea ever existed has passed on, leaving me with a good chunk of change and no obligation. So long, student loans...

But baack to reality... Did these people go to college in the dark ages? I worked every summer during high school saving for college, in addition to holding a part-time job during the school years. Even with this and the scholarships I received, I'm still racking up the student loans. Sure, I make much more than minimum wage now, but even the money I save during the summer goes toward living expenses throughout the school year (ie, rent, food, etc) when I am not able to work as many hours. As inconvenient as it is, I am fortunate that I don't have a car at the moment, since I know this would only slaughter my budget and further drain my soul of joy...

It's a good thing research scientists generally make crap, so I have a good chance of finishing my payments...oh...perhaps sometime before I die.

I do get annoyed at people who went to college "back in the day" and think this a case of kids expecting a free ride. There are those, sure, but the reality is that college is way over-priced and it is nearly impossible to do it without serious debt. And, since a degree no longer promises great earnings (think "education glut")...it's vicious. I am glad I'm not going now -- it was expensive when I went, took me 11 years to pay off, and it's even worse now.

Adults who go on about "these dern kinds jes need to learn to save" have no idea the state of things. It's much, much more than that.
