My sister, the lying cook.

by Julie R. Neidlinger on December 1, 2009

Part of the disappointment on waking up on Black Friday at 3 a.m. was staggering downstairs at my sister’s house, hoping for a peanut butter Rice Krispie  bar (called scotcheroos by some) for breakfast (they have peanut butter, a breakfast food item), only to find nothing. I opened the cupboard where my sister had put them so that the kids didn’t have easy access, my heart plummeting to see none left.

What to do now?!

“There are no more bars left,” I croaked to my sister Janet, who was standing behind me. I was a little panicked.

“You people ate them all  yesterday. They’re gone.”

Well.

My participation in Black Friday was, as usual, negligible. The beginnings of a head cold mixed with low finances and, as I’ve just indicated, no proper breakfast, combined in a way best illustrated by this photo my sister Jacqui took of me at the Aberdeen mall.

My sister Janet has specific traditional family obligations to fulfill, just as I and my other sister does. She  makes the peanut butter Rice Krispie bars, I make a scavenger hunt for the younger kids, and Jacqui screams a lot while we play the game “spoons.” It was completely unacceptable that the first huge pan of bars was allowed to run out!

Later that day, after several naps and continued mourning over the lack of available bars, my sister Janet whipped out another huge pan. We dove into them.

“I want to show you something,” she said, motioning me over to the cupboard as I prepared to eat my third Rice Krispie bar from batch number two. “Look.”

Hidden behind some dishes and other items was the plate of bars from the day before, stacked with nine delicious treats, untouched.

“You hid them?!”

“I had to. Everyone was eating them like crazy and I wanted some for later.”

“But…but…but…I could have had one for breakfast!”

“Well, tough.”

“But I could have had one! How could you?!”

Tonight I am heading to a friend’s house to help put up Christmas decorations. We will be eating pizza and we’re going to attempt to make my sister’s Rice Krispie bars.

I may hide a few.

My Sister’s Recipe

1 1/2 C corn syrup
1 1/2 C sugar

Bring to boil. Add  1 tsp vanilla and 2 1/4 C peanut butter. Add about 9 cups of Rice Krispies. Frost with equal parts melted semi-sweet chocolate chips and butterscotch chips.

It isn’t just the rice krispie bars, but all of those things, and times were fun. Thank you all for making it a fun time.

Hiding food and concealing the fact from your sister. That’s brutal.

I had to laugh as I never realized she had hidden bars for later. It was good times all around.
