It looks as if the “Flood of ’97” might be surpassed, at least for Fargo. I’m hoping it doesn’t end up happening, what happened to Grand Forks, but things are looking questionable.
I find the use of Twitter and Facebook an interesting new development in regards to mobilizing the sandbagging effort. Check out these Twitter profiles:
- RedRiverAtFargo: Updates on the river’s level
- FargoFlood: Instructions and information on sandbagging, organization, etc.
Twitter hashtags have also been instituted. Flood-related tweets are now starting to carry the #fargoflood hashtag. The more encompassing #flood09 is also in use since there are a lot of other cities along the Red River who are going to feel some hurt, though it looks now like Fargo will be the hardest hit.
I am also concerned about Devils Lake flooding, and what this winter’s snow accumulation is going to mean for that region. As for here, the forecast is that the rain will turn to snow/blizzard tomorrow.
March: in like a lion, and out like a lion?
You can follow what’s going on here in Bismarck on the Bismarck Tribune’s web page. Grand Forks has a floodcam. From sandbags to blizzards to huge ice jams and controlled explosions to evacuations…great month to not live along a river in North Dakota.
Here’s some video footage from here in Bismarck.
